How a group looks in Tally
Each company is its own Tally file, and many groups start a fresh file every year. Eight companies with three years of history can mean two dozen files, often on different machines, each with its own naming. Tally doesn’t consolidate across files, so the group’s numbers usually end up in a spreadsheet.
What is read
Trial balance, ledgers, vouchers, and the stock summary with HSN codes. Vouchers matter for intercompany work, because matching a sale in one company to a purchase in another needs the transaction as well as the balance. Older and newer files are read the same way, so nobody has to upgrade first.
What IT does
Once: authorise a read-only connection to each company file.
No longer every month: maintain custom TDL reports for finance, or export company files on request. Keeping the Tally servers reachable stays with IT.
See it in real groups
A trust running Tally in fourteen locations, each with its own chart of accounts, reads them as one group: the SNR Sons story.

So FINAHQ the the most important advantage that we had with FINAHQ was to get a consistent and a streamlined chart of account. As I said before we had multiple Tally instances running in SNR and each unit had a different naming convention for the chart of account. So we got a simple streamlined chart of accounts that had a good structure and a thought process that FINAHQ had already built.
A developer with entity books in Tally and project accounting in In4Suite has both read into one reconciled dataset: the DRA Homes story.
Questions
Commonly asked
Does it work with TallyPrime 7?
Yes. TallyPrime 4.x to 7.x and Tally ERP 9 are all read through the same XML interface, so a group running two Tally generations at once is read in one pass.
We start a new company file every year. Does that break it?
No. Each company file is read on its own and put together afterwards.
Closing stock isn't a ledger in our books. Where does the figure come from?
It's rebuilt at reporting time from the stock summary, since Tally usually doesn't hold closing stock as a ledger.
Our eight companies name the same account eight different ways. Who fixes that?
The mapping resolves the differences once, so nobody re-fixes them every month. That's why the second close is faster than the first.
Closing stock is not a ledger in our books. Where does the figure come from?
Tally usually does not hold closing stock as a ledger, so it is rebuilt at reporting time from the stock summary rather than taken from an account balance.
Does anything get written back into Tally?
No. The connection is read-only. Nothing is posted, changed or deleted, and Tally keeps running exactly as it does today.
