Dynamics is read by scheduled export, not a live connection. Your IT team sets up the export once per legal entity, and nothing is ever written back.
How a group looks in Dynamics
Each legal entity is an entity, and financial dimensions carry the analysis your business uses. Groups get harder for two reasons: dimensions are often set up differently in each legal entity, and older Navision installations are usually customised, so no two exports look alike until the layout is fixed.
How the data is read
A fixed export layout per legal entity lands on a schedule you set. Each file is checked for totals and unmapped accounts before anything is accepted. Because it’s an export, the data is only as current as the last one, so plan your close calendar around it.
What IT stops doing every month
Running export jobs by hand, fixing them when they break, and maintaining report customisations for finance.
Questions
Commonly asked
Is this a live connection?
No. Dynamics is read by scheduled export, so the data is as current as the last export. Worth knowing before you build a close calendar around it.
Do our financial dimensions survive the export?
Yes. An export that flattens dimensions leaves the whole MIS to be rebuilt from nothing, and this is designed to avoid exactly that.
We are on Navision, not Dynamics 365. Does that change anything?
It's read the same way, by scheduled export. Older Navision installations tend to be heavily customised, which matters more than the version number.
Who runs the export each month?
Nobody, once it's configured. It runs on your schedule, and each file is loaded and checked on arrival.
Which Dynamics versions are supported?
All versions, including Dynamics 365, NAV and Navision. The export layout is the same read regardless of version โ what changes is how customised your installation is, which is why the Navision question below matters more than the version number itself.
