Budget vs actual vs forecast
Compare budget, actual and forecast, with a common-size budget builder and scenario modelling.
A variance only tells you something when budget, actual and forecast sit side by side, on the same structure, for the same period. FINK keeps all three on your dimensions and your MIS chart.
- No reconciling first. Your budget stops living in a different file with a different shape. The variance is a straight comparison.
- Variances by line and by dimension, so you see which region, plant or product is off plan.
- Common-size budget builder. Common-size means each line is set as a share of a base figure, such as revenue.
- Scenario modelling for the what-ifs before you commit to a number.
| Region | Budget | Actual | Variance | Forecast |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| South | 32,000 | 34,180 | +2,180 | 45,600 |
| West | 24,500 | 22,760 | -1,740 | 30,200 |
| North | 11,800 | 12,940 | +1,140 | 17,500 |
| International | 9,400 | 8,560 | -840 | 11,000 |
| Total | 77,700 | 78,440 | +740 | 104,300 |
Two regions are behind here, which is the whole reason to read a variance column. The forecast is the rest of the year on the current run rate. Nobody typed it in as a target.
Questions
Commonly asked
Can we see the variance by region or plant?
Yes. Budget sits next to actuals, with variances by line and by any dimension you report on.
Do these actuals match our statutory numbers?
They come from the same mapped data, and the MIS chart is mapped to the statutory one, so they reconcile.
